Germany: Electronic cash card payments up in Q1/2007
Payments made with the Geldkarte electronic cash card in Germany climbed by around 50% to just under EUR 40mn (US$ 54.05mn) in the first quarter of 2007 compared to the first quarter of 2006. The electronic cash card benefited from the introduction of stricter youth protection rules which require chip card payment and age identification at cigarette vending machines. All in all, almost 70mn Geldkarte cards are in circulation in Germany.
