According to data of German Euro-Kartensysteme, EUR 19.2mn (US$ 25.15mn) has been charged to the about 64mn money cards in Germany in January 2006, i.e. 90% more than in January 2005. The increase is due to the introduction of a new regulation for the protection of minors which became effective January 2007. Since then smokers have to prove their age by means of the money card. A lot of smokers use therefore the money card to pay for the cigarettes at the same time.
