Ukash, a prepaid e-commerce voucher issuer, has teamed up with UK mobile operator Vodafone to offer its alternative payment method via cellphones.

Ukash provides Internet vouchers for consumers who either do not have a credit or debit card or do not want to use a payment card for online purchases. Consumers buy Ukash vouchers at convenience stores, newsagents or petrol stations, then type in the voucher’s unique account number at Websites that accept Ukash.

Through the partnership with Vodafone, customers can now buy vouchers by visiting the Ukash Mobile Web page using their cellphone's Internet browser. The user is charged £11 (US$22.35) for a £10 voucher, which is paid for out of their Vodafone prepaid cellphone airtime account.

The customer then receives a SMS text message containing a 19-digit Ukash number which can be used to make payments on PC-based Websites and mobile Internet sites that accept Ukash.

The service runs on Hybyte’s AirPayment mobile Internet platform. Hybyte is a UK-based wireless Internet service provider.

According to Ukash, its vouchers are available at around 40,000 point-of-sale terminals across the UK.
