Indian Bank has teamed up with NCR to develop a portable ATM. The cash machine, which is based on NCR’s Personas 75 ATM technology, also acts as an e-ticketing kiosk, Chennai-based Indian Bank says.

Indian Bank says it has installed its first portable, e-ticketing ATM at Egmore Railway Station in Chennai. The ATM will be followed the installation by Indian Bank of a further 51 portable, e-ticketing ATMs at Indian railway stations.

Indian Bank also plans to install portable ATMs at around 100 additional (non-railway) locations in a bid to reach unbanked people in rural areas.

Portable ATMs have been identified by Indian banks as their preferred option for reaching the country’s huge unbanked population, according to Indian Bank. The machines can be rolled out more quickly than conventional ATMs. They can also be deployed at locations where previously it would not have been cost-effective to install ATMs, it says.

Currently, Indian Bank has a total ATM estate of 500 machines across India.
