Monitise, a UK mobile banking and payments company, has teamed up with Visa Europe to develop a mobile prepaid shopping voucher service.

A Visa spokesperson tells ePaynews that Monitise and Visa Europe are looking for commitments from the card scheme’s member banks to roll out the service. No launch date has been set, although European banks are expected to offer the service at some point next year, the spokesperson says.

The service will allow consumers to create a Visa prepaid account on their cellphones and load the account with funds from either a bank account or a credit or debit card. They could then either use the prepaid account for online purchases or to transfer funds to friends and family members via their cellphone.

Visa Europe says it expects the service to be popular with the youth market and for gifts. It says the mobile voucher deal with Monitise will pave the way for the development of additional products and services for Visa Europe member banks.

“Mobile technologies will be the key driver of innovation in payments, creating opportunities for exciting new products for customers and tangible value creation for providers,” says Sandra Alzetta, Visa Europe senior vice president.
