Diebold ATMs will be dispensing prepaid cards using technology from Better ATM Services (BATM).
Mesa, Arizona-based BATM's technology allows prepaid cards to be dispensed from existing ATM cassettes that are normally used to dispense bank notes. To do this, BATM places prepaid cards on sheets which have the same dimension as large bank notes.
BATM says it has tested its technology with ATMs from two manufacturers. However Diebold’s are the first ATMs to be certified for use with the technology.
BATM’s prepaid card dispensing technology runs on Diebold’s ix, iSeries, and Opteva ATMs. The firm says it is in discussions with other ATM manufacturers, but has limited technology rollout to Diebold during a “charter commitment period” ending in June 2008.
“Better ATM Services’ technology breathes new life into legacy ATMs,” Charles E. Ducey, Diebold senior vice president, says in a statement.
ATM operators, retailers, transit organizations, event and entertainment management firms, amusement parks and banks will be able to dispense prepaid cards from existing ATMs using BATM’s technology, Thomas E. Honey, BATM’s chief development and marketing officer, says.
