Insurance companies Aviva, AXA, Groupama-GAN and MMA have launched the pilot version of new card "Duo", which will replace a paper document allowing people to transfer the payment of their medications in pharmacies to their insurance companies, so-called third-party payment. Initially 140,000 cards will be distributed in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône.

The programme will be extended to five other departments in September 2007. The plan was drawn up by Fédération française des sociétés d'assurances (FFSA) and Santé Pharma, who plan to deploy the system nationwide within one year. The eventual aim is to personalise insurance contracts to offer more tailored services.
