Spain's National Police Force wants to speed up the roll out of the electronic identity (e-ID or electronic DNI using its Spanish initials) card across Spain, with the aim to have the entire population carrying the new ID card in 2007. Joan Mesquida, General Manager of the Police and Civil Guard, revealed this aim in comments relating to the positive uptake of the new form of ID amongst the population, companies and administrations.

Over 320,000 Spaniards already have the e-ID card which includes an electronic signature. The project has required investment of over EUR 315mn (US$ 413.39mn). The regions of Castilla y Leon (excluding the Leon province), Galicia, Cantabria, Aragon, Asturias, La Rioja, Ceuta and Melilla, the Canaries and Navarra all have the e-ID card available.
