Credit card issuer Capital One has teamed up with credit reference agency Equifax to launch an identity alert service for its UK cardholders. The service is the first of its type to be offered in the UK, says Capital One.

The identity alert service is free to Capital One UK customers who register for it. Registered users receive emails whenever any change to their credit reference file occurs, such as when an application for credit is made in their name. They also receive two free full credit reference reports each year.

To receive the service, cardholders are directed by a link on the Capital One Website to a secure site hosted by Equifax. There they are asked to complete a questionnaire and supply information on financial matters including mortgages, credit and store cards, cellphones, and leases.

“We recognize that, although the issue of ID theft is serious, customers don’t always have time to check their credit files regularly for unusual activity that might suggest they have been victims,” Srini Gopalan, UK Senior Vice President of Capital One, says.

According to research carried out in 2007 by Capital One, over 42 million UK adults don’t know how to discover if they have been a victim of ID theft. Also, only one in 10 adults knows exactly what do if they suspect their ID has been stolen, Capital One found.

In addition to the ID theft alert service, Capital One says it provides cardholders with a named advisor to help them resolve problems if their ID is stolen.
