"Portal expands financial information with consumer-oriented advice on retirement and taxes.

Yahoo added a personal finance web site to the set of financial information it has long been offering to investors, allowing the company to appeal more to Internet users who might be tempted to check out other consumer money sites like the free ones AOL has lately begun to offer.

The Sunnyvale, California-based company has been facing increasing competition in the finance area from not only old-timer AOL, but also Microsoft’s improvements in MSN, Google Finance, as well as CNBC’s revamped web site. The Yahoo Personal Finance site covers nine main topics, including banking and budgeting, retirement, taxes, career and work, college and education, family and home, insurance, loans, and real estate, running the gamut of subjects that might be of interest of consumers who are not hardcore investors."
