"Global smartphone shipments grew by 13.4 percent in Q209 compared to the same period last year as consumers refuse to let the recession get in the way of their flashy phones.
Research firm Canalysis says in a note that 38.1 million phones were shipped around the world in Q209-4.5 million more than Q208.
The report also shows Finnish manufacturer Nokia is the world leader with 16.9 million handsets shipped in the quarter, a 10.4 percent year-on-year lift which gives it a 44.3 percent share of the global market. Given that Nokia primarily uses Symbian, it makes sense that it was the leading OS in Q2 and was installed on over half of all new handsets.
But lookout: Apple has a 13.7 percent market share, having sold 5.2 million iPhones in the quarter, and is clocking a phenomenal 626 percent year-on-year growth rate. Meanwhile, BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion’s eight million handsets shipped in the quarter gives it a 20.9 percent global market share, and now is being considered by some as the fastest growing company in the world
